The First World War (2003)
S1E2 Under the Eagle (1914-1915)
In the initial phases of the conflict on the Western Front, the warfare was swift and perilous, resulting in staggering casualty numbers compared to the static trench battles that followed. The Allies confronted the Germans at the Battle of the Marne, successfully pushing them back to elevated terrain where they began to fortify their positions. The Allies soon adopted a similar strategy, establishing their own defensive lines.
