While traveling to Larned, Matt, suffering from a fever, takes refuge for the night in an old, deserted shack. Upon waking to discover he has lost an entire day, he finds a recently freed convict, who had vowed to kill him, slumped against the wall, lifeless and unarmed, with two gunshot wounds. Strikingly, the gun that was used to kill the convict seems to belong to the marshal.
