In the context of the Vietnam War, the strategy of "search and destroy" evolved significantly, particularly in Southeast Asia. Without a defined front line, North Vietnamese forces frequently crossed into Cambodia, allowing them to launch surprise attacks near Saigon, the South's main stronghold. In response to this audacious tactic, American forces deployed heavily armed helicopter gunships from the U.S. First Air Cavalry Division, marking the introduction of the world's first helicopter-based military formation during the intense battle of the La Drang Valley.
