The object's exterior is so impenetrable that even a borazon drill leaves no mark, and attempts to break through trigger unsettling vibrations that distress those nearby. Quatermass speaks with local residents and learns that the area has been plagued by ghost sightings and poltergeist activity for decades. Meanwhile, a soldier emerges from the object in a state of hysteria, claiming to have witnessed a dwarf-like figure pass through the wall, a description eerily similar to a ghost sighting reported in a 1927 newspaper. After the drilling effort, an unexpected hole appears in the wall, granting Quatermass and his team access to the inner chamber.
