Toby Noe hits it big with a $5,000 lottery win, allowing him to indulge in a cart full of fireworks for the annual celebration. However, Standish tricks Toby into squandering his fortune through card games and drinks at the saloon. Tensions escalate when the fireworks unexpectedly ignite in the saloon. Meanwhile, the Ingalls, Olesons, and Garveys grow weary of the chaotic city life—especially after Nels gets drunk and wins a fortune himself. They quickly make plans to head back to Walnut Grove, bringing Albert along for the journey.
