Major Peter Gray and his wife, Ann, arrive at the 918th squadron, where Savage recognizes Ann as Ann Goss, his former fiancée from a year earlier. At Wing HQ, a WAC in photo reconnaissance spots something odd on a map, and likening it to a Michellene Lace pattern, Savage names the mission “Operation Spelling Bee.” With Major Jake Hays sidelined due to a broken knee, Savage selects Gray to lead what he describes as an easy mission: to bomb the rail yards at Saint Edouard and then conduct photo reconnaissance over a concealed area. Gray harbors jealousy over Savage's past with Ann, suspecting the mission was deliberately assigned to him. However, they discover that the hidden area is actually a launch site for new V-2 missiles, with a swarm of German fighters in the vicinity. Only 12 out of the 20 planes return from the reconnaissance mission. In the next operation to Saint Edouard, Savage takes command
