Upon returning to England after years away, Arthur Clennam is intrigued by the young seamstress, Amy Dorrit, who has taken up residence in his mother's home. Mrs. Clennam, who is typically unyielding and unsympathetic, seems out of character for taking in Amy. Could this act of kindness be a way to atone for a past mistake? Furthermore, Arthur wonders if it relates to his father's final words and the enigmatic pocket watch bearing the inscription, "do not forget."
