S3E3 Edinburgh Vaults
Edinburgh's South Bridge, constructed between 1785 and 1788, spans the valley connecting the High Street to George Square. Underneath its 19 massive stone arches, a network of floors and walls formed underground vaults that served as workshops and storage for local businesses. These vaults also housed families, but the conditions were far from comfortable. Ten or more individuals often crammed into small, dimly lit rooms with no ventilation, surrounded by the foul smells of fish oil lamps, garbage, and waste dumped into the streets, creating an almost unbearable living environment. Before long, the vaults became a refuge for the city's outcasts, including criminals, sex workers, and even murderers. Sealed off and abandoned in 1815, the vaults remained forgotten until their rediscovery in 1985, after which many have reported eerie sightings and experiences, including encounters with a young spirit.
