This marked Japan's unexpected entry into World War II with their assault on the U.S. Fleet at Pearl Harbor. Almost immediately, they triumphed over a significant British force in Singapore. For a time, Japan dominated the Pacific theater. However, the United States, once caught off guard, began to rally.
