Sue Thomas, a Deaf woman with a talent for lip-reading, relocates to Washington, D.C. to start her career as an FBI agent. However, she quickly realizes that the job comes with unexpected challenges. After expressing her frustrations to Special Agent Jack Hudson, he appreciates her candidness and puts her skills to the test by having her decode a colleague's conversation, revealing his plans for a weekend getaway with another woman. Impressed, Jack invites Sue to join his Special Investigators Unit, where she soon learns that her new friend Lucy is dating Myles, the man Sue overheard.
