Jack emerges as the main rival for Dash and her athletic brother, Alec, during the Heritage Day Races, much to the McKinleys' discontent. They place their bets on Jack, igniting Dash’s competitive spirit. Alec has returned to Mt. Thomas as the new PE teacher, eager to lead the girls' hockey team and help his top players shine. While Dash admires her brother, she struggles to defend him when his star player unexpectedly slaps him.
