With a fire ban in place, PJ finds himself drawn to Jo one night, while Ben drinks heavily in another room. As PJ and Jo lie together, they suddenly catch the scent of smoke and realize their house is ablaze. They manage to rescue a drunken Ben before escaping. Once at the hospital, Jonesy delivers the devastating news that everything they owned has been lost. Ben claims he was attacked by an intruder, prompting the involvement of an arson squad. Meanwhile, Tess and Jonesy clash over her recent marriage to Dr. Carmichael. While sifting through the ruins, PJ discovers a photo of Maggie and secretly keeps it from Jo. The investigation reveals that the fire was caused by a candelabra, which Ben had been using. As another fire erupts, Wayne Bayliss, who entered PJ's home after the incident, becomes a suspect when a driptorch and a collection of fire-related articles are found at his place.
