In present-day Mystic Falls, a string of murders triggers memories for Damon of a similar wave of violence from a century ago. Flashing back to 1912, he remembers Sage, a captivating vampire who introduced him to a different way of living. Despite Sheriff Forbes advising him against meddling in her investigation, Damon believes she’s pursuing the wrong lead. Meanwhile, Elena and Matt decide to break into a location to gather evidence that could prove Dr. Fell's guilt. Rebekah, for her own mysterious reasons, becomes intrigued by one of the town's historic sites. In the end, Elena gains clarity about her life's direction, while Damon reveals something heartfelt to Stefan.
